In this great city of Toronto we have a lot of two things; clothing lines and rappers. I personally love art and I try to keep as fresh as possible within my budget so clothing lines is what I attract to mostly. Luckily with our very diverse city, we have a great selection of unique clothing designed by very talented individuals…But a lot of clothing lines lack the momentum to hold up to a strong run (I don’t speak about all Toronto lines…because there are a lot of lines that are making major strides).
I think the lack of momentum comes from a lack of planning and research which is a factor for all business startups that fail. I understand why though, a lot of the individuals starting these lines are artists who want to express their work through articles clothing and the business aspect is usually alien to them. Many continue to work without factoring that part of their business thinking that simply consistency will pave their way to success.
I know seems like a pretty basic equation (Clothes + Business = Success), but surprisingly a lot of clothing lines lack it and without it, it is like journey to sudden or gradual doom. Let us say for example a clothing line blows up and they experience a high level of success in a matter of months, without adequate planning and research the foundation of success will easily collapse. The situation is similar to when YouTube first started, they did not anticipate, in other words plan, for such a response from users so their servers where shutting down continuously. YouTube was finally able to adjust to the demand but defense is always cheaper then offensive.
To end this rant off, I just want to emphasis that with a clothing line (or any business for that matter), it is very important to fully research and understand the process of the business and with that understanding a properly planned schedule should be created and implemented so that the effort is consistent and also efficient.
