According to website Hollywood.com Johnny Depp is the number one candidate to play Batman villain The Riddler in the next instalment of the comic book movie franchise.
After the huge success of The Dark Knight, which has taken in $870,616,885 at the worldwide box office, producers of the film are pretty damn confident that they can lure Depp away from his home in France to tackle Christian Bale’s Batman on the big screen.
Also, according to the National Enquirer (which means it’s probably not true but I thought I’d include it anyway), studio bosses also want Oscar winner Philip Seymour Hoffman onboard to play another of the Caped Crusader’s infamous arch-foes, the Penguin.
For those that don’t know both The Riddler and Penguin have popped up on the small screen and the big screen over the past 60 years. Most recently we probably all remember Jim Carrey’s lame attempt at bringing the Riddler to life. As for the Penguin, he’s been played by screen legends Burgess Meredith and Danny DeVito.
A random source told the Enquirer (another reason not to trust this…but all the same I’m going to post it anyway), “Producers are convinced that the role of the Riddler is perfect for Depp. Johnny’s a pro. He’ll be able to take direction from director Chris Nolan and still make the character his own.”
As for the Penguin?
“And what better Penguin is there than Philip Seymour Hoffman?”
I will say this, Johnny Depp is arguably the best character actor of our time so if anyone can take on the enigmatic role of The Riddler it for sure can be him! As for the Penguin, I don’t know if Philip Seymour Hoffman works. I mean he’s a great actor, don’t get me wrong, but I just can’t visualize him as the role. Then again make-up can do a lot to a person, I mean I had the same doubts about Heath Ledger and he shut me up pretty good so I guess I’ll just let this story unfold and see where things end up.
