Liveagl’s 10 Picks For TIFF 2009

Tiff is finally here and I’m always excited about what it brings; celebrities, good parties, an extended liquor time, and the most importantly.. films, great films. The only potential problem is that the sheer amount of films can get someone lost in translation. For that specific reason, we have a compiled a list of Liveagl’s picks for this year’s film fest (there is no particular order). I hope that all my TO’ers go out and experience what TIFF has to offer, and for everyone else these movies will be at a film festival or a theatre near you shortly.
The Road

I’ve read this book so I know how extraordinary and unique the story is. Its important to say that this film will not be for the faint of heart, it will be deep, sad and for the most part disgusting. In the midst of that, there is a strong story that has the potential to move hearts.

Good Hair

I don’t find Chris Rock to be really funny, I find him more to be truthful and observant which is still very entertaining. His movie, which will be premiering at the fest, will be investigating black hair and the role it plays in the black community. From the trailer it looks like just a funny comedy, but knowing how Chris Rock operates, I think it’s going to be deeper then what people think.

Precious

Ofcoarse Precious was going to be on the list, you knew it. This movie has a huge amount of hype trailing it so it will be interesting to see if it meets it. I’m pretty sure it will, because the hype surrounding the film is not synthetically produced by promotional campaigns but by people’s genuine interest in a unique story. If you’re not familiar with the film please watch the trailer, it features Mariah Carey and Monique (there are Oscar talks for her performance) ..FYI: Oprah might be coming down for the premier.

City Of Life And Death

There has been a lot of talk about this movie, words like inspiring and moving have been used to describe it. The film looks like a Chinese version of Schindler’s list, but with historic events that are not as known as the Holocaust. The story is about the six-week period following the Japanese capture of Nanking, then capital of the Republic of China, on December 9, 1937.

Valhalla Rising

This movie looks extremely gruesome, It resembles a Braveheart of 2009 with multiplied gore (watch the trailer and see what I mean). However I like epic films with a few exceptions, so I still would like to see it. The synopsis is alot to explain so watch the trailer. However, If you liked Troy, Braveheart, Gladiator, then you will probably be into this movie.

Capitalism: A Love Story

With all the things that happened with the economy and the role the government played, a Michael Moore movie was inevitable. I know there has been a lot talk about the validity of his information, but he’s just entertaining to me.

The Informant

I’m a big fan of Matt Damon, and I will always support his films. Even past that, this movie looks interesting because I love the dark comedy in it. Matt plays an overweight exec turned whistleblower who provides sensitive information to the FBI about his sketchy company. The trailer had me laughing a few times so It might be worth a check out.

Up In The Air

I realized that I like George Clooney as a comedic actor, he had me falling over in Burn After Reading. Luckily George is back at it again in this movie where he plays a corporate downsizing expert whose cherished life on the road is threatened just as he is on the cusp of reaching ten million frequent flyer miles and just after he’s met the frequent-traveler woman of his dreams.

Youth In Revolt

I am big fan of Michael Cera (The dude in Juno, Superbad, and Nick & Norah’s playlist). It’s sad that he is typecast as the awkward teenager, but he will also be able play a bad ass in this duo role. The trailer had me busting my guts with laughs..I most definitely have to watch this one.

Vengeance

I love the John Woo classic shoot em ups, and Vengeance resembles of them (probably because it takes place in Hong Kong). The trailer doesn’t show too much but a simple story. From all the factors this movie could be classic cult flick or a horrible train wreck.
