The Remix Project: Make a Change – Save a City

I had the pleasure of attending one of Toronto’s greatest events “Give Money-Make Change” last Thursday on June 11, 2009. My purpose there was to first and foremost DONATE money to help a cause so great that I can’t even begin to explain how important it is within the GTA community. Secondly, I wanted to take the opportunity to network with some of the most talented and brilliant industry heads that Toronto has generated. There is so much to say, however, I’ll have to jump right to the point for the purpose of this blog post. This post is about a project known as The Remix Project that’s helped it’s city in more ways than one could count on both fingers and toes all together, and needs it’s city (the people) to help it in return as it approaches a crisis.
The Remix Project is an arts, cultural and life skills incubator serving young people across the GTA but located right in the heart of Toronto. Remix works to help some of the most gifted but vulnerable young people in the city to realize their own creative and business-minded potential while working to strengthen Toronto, Canada’s burgeoning creative industry. Some of these gifted individuals include William “Photo Will” Nguyen- the ‘go to’ event photographer, who skillfully captures the moments at some of Toronto’s most exclusive events, Prince “Future the Prince” Lyfe-who is actually currently touring the globe as Drake’s official DJ and Karla “hustleGRL” Moy- that 16 year old Canadian girl that everyone seems to hear about on the netwaves. Those who live in Toronto are no strangers to these individuals and many more.
Despite all it’s successes, such as receiving awards and accolades since it’s inception in October of 2006, operating for almost three years now, having successfully graduated close to 120 young people from diverse backgrounds and situations through it’s programs who have gone on to comprise the backbone of Toronto’s burgeoning urban cultural and lifestyle industries, The Remix Project itself approaches a state of crises. Nearly half of its funding came through the direction of research from National Crime Prevention Canada (NCPC). Deemed a success by NCPC and even worthy of replication in other cities around the country, they are unfortunately unable to continue to fund any project past its initial “pilot” and “research” phase.
In addition, the program’s lease is up at their current location come August 31st with no chance for renewal (the building is being torn down to make way for new condominium developments) and the need for community support for the United Nations award-winning, mayor’s community safety panel priority, life and technical skills program is major.
For those who want to help, any Donation- no matter how much is welcomed. Please support a good cause. Not only will it better the future of a lot of young individuals, it will also help strengthen Toronto, Canada’s burgeoning creative industry.
