Where does this idea come from that The Death of Superman is some classic story that needs to be told over and over again? The ‘graphic novel’ was just a bunch of slopped together shit designed to kill a year’s worth of comics continuity so that the shitty Lois and Clark show could catch up and they could do the Superman Marries Lois story as a synergistic media event. it was a piece of shit. And there was nothing at all redeeming about Superman Returns. Bad bad bad, all the way around.

Here is my heated, in-depth review of Superman Returns from after I first saw it: http://sean-ward.livejournal.com/53071.html#cutid1

I see what your saying Sean, but I am not implying that it was a classic at all, but there are 4 reasons why the story would work and work extremely well…,

One..the fight between Superman and Doomsday would compensate for the unequal protagonist/antagonist balance of the first movie (and I think that was the real fault..Superman could of blew Luthor to space frankly)

Second.. the fight would be incredible to watch with the standard of movies today( I picture the fight between Neo and Agent Smith but better looking and more explosive) Even the fight in the animated movie was pretty exciting…

Third…Everyone likes to see a hero fall and rise, and with all powerful hero like superman..dying, and coming back, ppl will really get attached to the story and the metaphor it represents (thats why the comic broke records..)

Fourth…People are tired of the save the day type of hero..its is getting boring, DC saw that and took the dark route with the Dark Knight..and look the results..This story is even darker with a more iconic hero…

.. I agree that the continuing the story after the death was corny and melodramatic, but thats the beauty with DC, they’re movies are not hardcodded like Marvel, they are able to completely change it too how they see fit because WB owns DC..there is no second party…

I think that what we need is essentially a two-hour, live-action Fleischer Brothers cartoon with Superman beating up giant robots and a mad scientist with a death ray laser.

It is possible that I am completely out of touch on this one.
