That’s a great way to look at it, but on the other hand I think naturally there will be rappers that well ascend over others due to style and substance.
I do agree that Internet has played a huge role, and is now a factor that artist should be paying attention to when continuing there growth. New artists have done a great job, but the fading stars need to jump on that bandwagon..
Though I do see what your saying, and I do think at this point there is a level playing field, but I think an Elite of top rappers will reform sooner or later..
Thanks for the Great Comment

Good question and I must say that I don’t know. I am a fan of hip hop, but it is not my first pick when at the record shop. The last hiphop cd that I purchased was 808’s which isnt really hip hop. I still keep Outkast, Ghostface, GZA and Ball & G. I dont’ know who will answer the call, but someone needs to. I am very much looking forward to the day the emcees will return to having a message in the music. I enjoy substance and I would much rather the young’ns run around singing something positive than this foolishness now.

The thing is, there are TONS of artists with a message. It’s just there are so many of them. It’s noisy out here in the world of art, seriously. I think the real question is who is going to be able to cut through the noise and make an impact. For me, I feel it will be those already with brand name recognition and a few that get picked up by sites like this, along with those that learn how to build communities on their own.

Agreed….and well said, it is extremely noisy. Noisy to the point that I dont want to hear anything……nothing new, because lately it seems that new is very mainstream and “bubblegum”. Like childish if you will. Dancing and rapping about what you have and how others want to be like you and own what you do does not move me. I enjoy fiyah tracks and a message, or story telling. I don’t know any new cats that are providing me with that. If you have any suggestions please help a Queen out with hotness.

I really do not know if there needs to be a hierarchy any time soon, because the internet has leveled the playing field and the masses will redeem who are the top eMCees. At the same time, I do believe this leveling is good, because it will hopefully inspire new creativity in the craft of rap.
I think some new folks to pay attention to are: Detroit CYDI, rapper SelfSays, rapper Danny Brown, rapper Illogic, rapper/producer Blueprint and rapper/producer Ill Poetic. Sorry all these guys are from the Midwest, but I feel like the new breed is coming and when the dust settles, people will know who they are.
I still think the greats will stay great. eLZhi, Ludacris, T.I. (is a monster now), Nas, Jay Z… but they are a part of the old paradigm and they will have to relearn how to connect with their fans, because the big box method is dying. While I am not a fan of Soulja Boy, his emergence show click in people’s mind that the internet is a powerful instrument. With so many folks on the internet now though, you have to be smart with how you use it.
Interesting post, by the way.
